This week I was digging around in the wonderful world of _________. (the spot where we get all our fabric) and I came across a Swiss bread bag. It was very unassuming because it looks like an ugly rubbery plastic turtle that would decorate a tacky garden. Although after you figure out how to open it up, it really is amazing.

The story goes… That these bags were used to bring warm bread to soldiers, the thick rubbery plastic helped insulate the bag to keep the bread nice and warm.

I bought it and then brought it home. After inspecting it for probably an hour I began taking it apart. I completely disassembled it piece by piece and then started to rebuild it from scratch. These photos are of the bread bag now turned into a functional book bag or side bag for the day. I used every piece on the bag except for the gnarly rubbery plastic cover, which seemed to soak up most of the gross smell, sadly the rubber was unsalvageable. The only thing I added was the natural canvas lining, which helps make the inside more functional as well as provides good structure for the bag even when its empty.

I’m hoping to gather up around 200 of these to make a limited run.

Who would be interested?
Let me know. I’m not sure on the price yet but Ill post it pretty soon.

I hope you’re having a good week,
Steve
